In 1822, mathematician Joseph Fourier proved that any complex wave can be defined as a sum of regular sine waves occurring in different combinations at different points in time. For example, piano keys in specific combinations produce harmonious chords. Individual keys emit regular sine waves (pitches/frequencies) and we perceive the sound as one chord, the complicated summation of those waves. Fourier’s equation allows us to mathematically decompose any chord to know the specific pitches played.

80 years later, sound radio emerged via the principles proven by Fourier. The radio receives a sound signal broadcasted from another source; it interprets each moment along that wave and amplifies the individual frequencies encoded, thus transmitting the original source’s sound.

50 years later, we invented color screens using a grid of pixels, each of which consist of 3 light sources— Red, Green, and Blue. By adjusting the strength of each color, a pixel can emit any color. As keys can produce chords, RGB in specific arrangements produce a unique color. Eventually we could broadcast a grid of color as a singular signal, to be received and decoded by individual television sets.

As the production of screens cheapened, access to revolutionary entertainment infiltrated more of Western daily life, eventually becoming ubiquitous altogether. The use of the Fourier transform to stream digital information fundamentally shifted our habits of communication and attention. It’s one of the most consequential human developments we never think about. At its best, cultural synergy strengthened. At its worst, desire, greed and over-consumption interbred.
